Tuesday Bible Study Notes Westside Care Center Tuesday, January 23, 2006 Prayer Principle 3A: Submission: Worthy Walk Mr. C. Pat Lanyon What does it mean to pray "Your will be done...?" This is what we are asking and trying to answer from the Bible. We found the following passage to be one of the key passages which gives us pointed instruction about this very section of our Lord’s Model Prayer in Matthew 6. Colossians 1:9-12 9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. The word "that" repeated in this section defines for us ‘purpose statements’ that seem to give two main results, or purposes, of prayer for knowledge of God’s will. We have just finished studying what it means to "be filled" [Section 1B] by examining the phrase "in all wisdom and spiritual understanding." We found that wisdom is facts about what God’s will is a specifically stated in the Bible, and then we found that spiritual understanding is applying those facts to life. Therefore we found it important to ask for certain character qualities to help us actually DO God’s will. Once action is in place, now, v10, we see that it takes us on a pathway, or, journey, or as given here: a spiritual "walk." The remainder of this passage seems to list for us conditions that are required if we are to say that our walk is characterized as "worthy." Introduction: (3A. 3D. "INCREASING in the knowledge of God, [and] 4D. "STRENGTHENED with all might according to His glorious power for... 5D. (All) PATIENCE and 6D. (All) LONGSUFFERING with joy. 7D. GIVING THANKS to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light." The phrase "to all pleasing" is the literal way it’s rendered in the original. The word pleasing is from a Greek word, appesko, meaning: " to accommodate one's self to the opinions desires and interests of others," and adds the sense of "carrying off, or carrying away with one’s emotions of excitement" " Immediately preceding this word in the original are the words eis pasao, or "into all things" thus we have the translation fully pleasing. What does the Bible say about pleasing God? Pr 16:7 When a man's ways please the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Thus pleasing God is an astounding transforming principle to everyone around us. Php 4:18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. In this passage’s context is the rejoicing focus, Thus pleasing God not only makes Him happy– it can make us able to rejoice in whatever circumstances we fin ourselves in! 1Th 4:1 Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; This chapter we have studied in our first sessions on submission, and we realized that the sexual "pleasures" outside of marriage are forbidden from verses 3-4. However, few of us are ignorant of the ‘excitement’ that physical act brings – How much better to seek to bring an even greater and better pleasure to God! 2Ti 2:4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. Private Soldiers learn early in their training it is best to keep the ‘sarge’ happy with their training responses. Again this is another kind of 'word picture' of pleasure to envision. Their whole training time separates them from normal routines of civilian life. Heb 11:5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. Only 2 people in the Bible, [Enoch and Elijah] so pleased God that they did not die. Heb 13:16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Here we see another way to please God: be righteous and be hospitable 1Jo 3:22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. Pleasing God brings rewards to us quickly when we pray. Application: List three things from the ideas above you can do this week that will make you pleasing to God relating to doing His will.
